The Radiant Spleen Tarot by Eric K. Lerner

from 25.00

Eric K. Lerner writes:

“I composed the original version of the Radiant Spleen Tarot Summer and Fall 2004 as a personal distraction amidst intravenous tubes, oxygen tanks, and physical traumas that attended providing end of life care for a loved one. I’d picked up some blank postcards and a set of metallic glitter pens and drew the cards bedside. Being able to pull one out and say “Look at the pretty picture” provided respite, and once the life death drama ended I gave the cards little thought.

Years later, trying to think of a Christmas gift for a friend, I came across the cards and decided to hand craft a set. She suggested bringing out in a small edition. Looking at the images again, I could see that the iconography fit consistently with pre-established interpretations of the major arcana and suggested cathartic biological and psychological functions.

Coming up with the word Radiant in the title was easy. It suggests the shimmering iridescent color scheme. Plus, it means issuing or forming rays (of light), of heat, and moving or operating in a radial manner. Spleen was tougher. Given it is an organ that oft goes awry it contradicts positive connotations of radiant. However spleen’s function is to create new red blood cells, and in creating the deck I personally was trying to find life facing death. That it is a visceral word works for me. As a word it is derived from the Old Italian splene which meant “of learned origin…” It also refers to a number of variable states and moods throughout its English usage, including merriment, a caprice, violent nature, and melancholy. It has also been widely used as a synonym for one’s state of humor with orientation determined by modifying additives. “In fine spleen” means to be particularly happy or witty, while Churchill equated a “spleen struck mind” with a depressive state. The multivalent meanings can each specifically describe states visualized in the cards.

Hence, the name Radiant Spleen.

This is the second printing for the Radiant Spleen Tarot. It is a 24 card Major Arcana deck. The two extra cards consist of a title card and an alternate Lovers card (which was not part of the first printing). The first edition was printed on gold metallic paper and backed with card stock. This edition is printed on heavy-duty glossy white vinyl. They are durable and much easier to shuffle. There is no back image. The packaging has been simplified to a craft envelope with a personalized hand drawn doodle. The little white book instructions are available as a free downloadable pdf.

The original edition of Radiant Spleen sold for $65.00. It has since fetched over $300.00 on the second hand auction market. This edition is available for $25.00 with any other purchase from Three Bones Society, including Thomas van der Krogt prints and boutique items. Alone it costs $45.00. Three bones Society charges flat rate shipping costs so the cost of shipping is no different for one or multiple items.
